Turn Illness into a Weapon – Artistic perspectives within healthcare movements
Kunsthaus Bethanien
|
01/06–18/08/2024
WITH:
Anguezomo Mba Bikoro, The Chronic Iconic (Jessica Cummin), Chloe Pascal Crawford, Criptonite (Edwin Ramirez & Nina Mühlemann), Miriam Döring, Tomás Espinosa, Eva Egermann & Cordula Thym, Lotti Fellner-Wyler, Feministische Gesundheitsrecherchegruppe, Cornelia Herfurtner, Kallia Kefala, Magda Korsinsky, Julia Lübbecke, MELT (Ren Loren Britton & Iz Paehr), Silvi Naçi, Sophie Utikal, RA Walden
Curated by

Linnéa Meiners

Reacting to the healthcare system’s discriminatory structures, in 1972, the Sozialistische Patient*innenkollektiv1 (Socialist Patients‘ Collective) called to weaponise their illness. The group aimed not to portray illness as something individual that must be overcome alone, but to show its complex connections with social neglect and structural inequalities. Relatedly, this exhibition draws attention to the structural and intersectional disadvantages faced by disabled, chronically ill, and/or neurodivergent people in a late-capitalist, ableist system. How to turn illness into a weapon?
The group exhibition Turn Illness into a Weapon – Artistic perspectives within healthcare movements2 takes its starting-point from the grassroots healthcare struggles around the former Diakonissen-Krankenhaus (welfare hospital) Bethanien in 1970s Berlin. When it became clear that the abandoned building was to be transformed into artists‘ studios, the initiative Kampfkomitee Bethanien, among others, demanded to use the space as a children’s polyclinic. In the exhibition, 17 artistic positions are brought into dialogue with the site where these specific political struggles played out. The artists criticise present-day conditions in art and healthcare policy, and point towards alternatives.

"The House of Dream" workshop
Reparation Rituals for Unlearning Violence

with Anguezomo Mba Bikoro & guests
October 8th, 14:00-19:00 | Ausland Berlin
The session is a multi-sensory workshop focusing on legal resources, somatic therapy, healing historical trauma, collective readings and ancestral healing as tools of protection against domestic violence notably within queer relationships. Focusing on radical black feminist queer practices through activism and transformational justice, we will focus on short readings from Semra Ertan, Carmen Maria Machado and Bell Hooks to introduce trauma-informed healing bodies as tools against institutional and domestic abuse within queer migrant affected communities focusing on race relations. Artistic sonic, film and print material from International Women* Space and Nyabinghi Lab introduce voices from black feminist resistance movements through drawing therapy. We discover what are safe and consensual exchanges, releasing trauma from our bodies; processing grief and trauma bond; tools to safely exit spaces of coercive control; somatic expression and voice; somatic tools for self-care and protection rituals for growth. The workshop invites special guests and is part of an ongoing series in collaboration with Nyabinghi Lab, International Women’s Space and WeAreBornFree Empowerment Radio. As part of the session, a donation will be sent to the organisation Women In Exile because community is anchored in mutual respect, support, acknowledgment and solidarity.

Twists: Dance and Decoloniality  A Critical Research on Dance Institutions by Tanzfabrik Berlin in Cooperation with ada Studio, HZT Berlin, Uferstudios, Freie Universität and Humboldt Universität, advised by Diversity Arts Culture.

07.2020 – with Nathalie Anguezomo Mba Bikoro
»Performing With Darkness: Performing in Times of Liberation and Anti-Colonial Resistance«: This session investigates the narratives of black performers in theatre, film and public space and the political strategies of evolving dance into live art. The discussion amplifies on how colonial structures affected performance and memory in the global south and how the trans-missions of anti-colonial resistance led by Black feminists movements in Cameroon, Kenya and Nigeria transformed the way liberation movements developed in South Africa and elsewhere through the Diaspora in film and dance. The session includes a short film screening by Kathleen Collins, a reading of selected texts by Dionne Brand, Audre Lorde and Toni Morrison focusing on African women, memory and resistance within the body & reception of representational frameworks in Western practice; a talk and short exercises on ‘performing archiving histories’ position, movement & solidarity.

Art Residency July 2019

11 July 2019 lecture performance "A History On Lateness"
A visual and sonic lecture-performance on the practice of speaking with ghosts, bringing to light stories of women entangled in colonial and post-colonial experiences through the narrative of science-fiction writing and film. The performance reveals how the words of the mothers of Négritude were illegally recycled by German feminist writers after the 60s, and how popular feminist writing of the 19th century marked the domestication of language of forest parrots in Western Africa.
